The University of Exeter and its rapidly developing Wi-Fi needs

The Client

The University of Exeter stands as a prestigious institution, ranking among the top universities globally with a vibrant community of over 29,000 students and more than 10,000 employees.

The Project

In alignment with its ambitious digital strategy for 2030, the university aims to become the most accessible and connected destination for users. To enhance its technological infrastructure, the University of Exeter collaborated with MarQuest, a partner with whom it has enjoyed a decade-long relationship. MarQuest expertly designed over 50 buildings for the university, capturing data using the Ekahau survey tool, tailoring bespoke Wi-Fi solutions that ensure seamless connectivity throughout a diverse array of environments. From high-capacity lecture halls that serve as hubs of learning and collaboration, to specialised science labs engineered for intricate research, every building is thoughtfully designed to meet both functional and aesthetic standards.

The university recognised the importance of robust connectivity within the outdoor areas allowing students and faculty to engage with digital resources, no matter where they are on campus. The Wi-Fi designs for the these areas presented unique considerations such as mounting options and power availability. Power considerations were carefully addressed, ensuring that outdoor areas can support necessary technology without compromising the surrounding landscape.

In a collaborative effort aimed at enhancing the functionality and aesthetics of the Hatherly Building, MarQuest was engaged by the university to partner with Tridonic in the design and implementation of an innovative lighting system. This initiative not only sought to upgrade the existing lighting infrastructure but also to leverage advanced technologies that could significantly improve energy efficiency and user experience. Understanding the key role of modern lighting controls, MarQuest implemented a sophisticated thread networking protocol in the new design. To ensure precision in the layout and functionality of the lighting system, MarQuest utilised the RF planning tool, iBwave, to produce an accurate building model. This collaboration represents a significant step toward creating an environment that prioritises both user comfort and energy efficiency, showcasing how technology and design can come together to enhance the functionality of educational spaces.

By prioritising comprehensive coverage, the innovative designs implemented by MarQuest ensure that all users can easily access the digital resources they require, ultimately fostering an enriching academic environment. Through thorough site surveys and meticulous planning, MarQuest successfully pinpointed the optimal locations for access points. The process involved a detailed analysis of various factors, including the layout of the building, the density of users in different areas, and the compatibility of devices with the network infrastructure.

The Result

MarQuest validated the enhanced network performance through testing methodologies that included comprehensive performance assessments. By measuring signal strength, capacity, and coverage across various buildings, identifying potential bottlenecks and weak spots within the network. Such analysis allowed us to fine-tune the network configuration, ultimately ensuring exceptional wireless connectivity for users on campus. Furthermore, the university successfully installed their Wi-Fi access points utilising MarQuest's universal mounting bracket systems, enhancing both functionality and ease of installation. This collaborative effort has resulted in a robust network infrastructure that can support the increasing demand for reliable internet access across the university's facilities.
